Odoo 20: what is new compared to Odoo 19?

Odoo 20 was unveiled at Odoo Experience in Brussels. The new release introduces a range of enhancements across areas such as AI, eCommerce, accounting, inventory management, and website SEO. It also includes changes that may affect existing workflows, such as moving Field Service into the Planning app.

What does that mean in practice? We are happy to explain that to you.

AI agents do more than answer questions

AI was already present in Odoo 19. Users could ask AI agents questions about information from documents and their own Odoo database, or request help in creating content.

In Odoo 20, agents can also perform more executive tasks. For example, they can create or modify records and use files as input. Agents can also be triggered from scheduled actions and automations. Through MCP, the Model Context Protocol, Odoo can be connected to external tools. Which AI client you can use for that and what it can specifically do depends on the chosen connection and configuration.

Additionally, there are features such as voice interaction, insight into the progress of an AI task, and automatic selection of an AI model.

More focus on website SEO

Odoo 19 already offered SEO checks and improvements to eCommerce product pages. Odoo 20 adds technical capabilities to that. For instance, structured data is automatically added to web pages. This helps search engines interpret the content of a page and can contribute to rich results: search results with additional information, such as a product price or rating. The use of structured data does not guarantee that Google will display such results.

Odoo also mentions improvements to sitemaps, mobile images, and pagination. Website administrators can use AI to enhance a page's SEO. Additionally, it is possible to create an llms.txt file, intended to help large language models understand website content. This is a new technical option, but no guarantee of better positions in search engines or visibility in AI responses.

New opportunities for eCommerce

For webshops, Odoo 20 includes features that can be noticeable for both customers and administrators. Customers can request returns through the customer portal. Products can be automatically published or hidden based on inventory.

Odoo can also make suggestions for accessories, optional products, and alternatives. Companies can set minimum order quantities and determine whether product prices are displayed including or excluding VAT, for example, per price list.

For customer follow-up, automatic review requests and WhatsApp messages for abandoned carts have been added. Odoo 19 already improved the shop, product, and checkout pages. In Odoo 20, the focus is more on return handling and further automation of the sales process.

Practical improvements to accounting

When entering supplier invoices, Odoo 20 can suggest lines based on previous invoices and descriptions. This can help to fill in products, accounts, and taxes more quickly.

The matching between supplier invoices and purchase orders has also been expanded. Users gain more insight into similarities and differences and can adjust matches. Furthermore, Odoo mentions a report with the status of bank reconciliations and clearer payment statuses.

With a PISP connection, supplier invoices can be paid directly from Odoo where that payment method is available. The availability of financial functions also depends on the country, bank connection, and configuration.

Further enhancements to Inventory and Manufacturing

Voor productiebedrijven zijn er verbeteringen aan de planning van productie- en werkorders. Productieorders worden standaard zo vroeg mogelijk ingepland. Lopende productieorders kunnen worden gesplitst, zodat een resterende hoeveelheid later verder kan worden geproduceerd. Werkorders zijn bovendien uitgebreider te plannen via onder meer Kanban- en Gantt-weergaven.

In inventory management, there are improvements to replenishment proposals and reports. A change in cost price can also have consequences for the valuation of previous deliveries, for example, when additional costs become known later.

Odoo 19 already improved inventory valuation, replenishment rules, and production planning. Odoo 20 further expands those capabilities.

Offline access and day-to-day operations

Odoo 20 expands the offline mode. Users can create, edit, archive, and delete records offline. They can also reuse previously executed searches.

This can be useful during customer visits or at a trade show with an unstable internet connection. The data and actions available offline do depend on the application and configuration.

Daarnaast bevat Odoo 20 verbeteringen voor mobiel gebruik, onder andere aan formulieren en datumselectie. In lijst- en Kanban-weergaven kunnen meerdere records tegelijk worden versleept.

Field Service is now part of Planning

An important change for existing users: Field Service is no longer a standalone app in Odoo 20. The functionality has been integrated into Planning.

The Planning app includes options for automatic scheduling based on customer locations, route information, and the location of technicians. There are also features for customer reviews and travel reimbursements.

Changes in Payroll

In Payroll zijn de werkregistraties en de koppeling tussen Planning en Payroll aangepast. Werkregistratietypes en verloftypes zijn samengevoegd. Daarnaast zijn er verbeteringen aan salarisruns, roosters en de salarisverwerking.

This may be relevant for organizations that use Planning for services and hours that carry over into payroll. Check in advance which settings, reports, and integrations are used in your environment.

New in Odoo 20: Light Users in Odoo

A major innovation in Odoo 20 is the introduction of Light Users: employees who work in Odoo with their own login but do not need full access to all business apps. This allows organizations to have more employees work directly in Odoo without giving everyone the same extensive user profile.

This is particularly interesting for warehouses. Light Users can access the Barcode app in Odoo 20 and perform barcode actions there. Think of warehouse staff scanning products during receiving, picking, or moving goods. The actions are processed directly in Odoo, while access to broader inventory processes and settings remains with the authorized users.

Additionally, Light Users can use specific functions depending on the assigned rights, for example, HR self-service, Planning, the cash register, or consulting internal information. A personnel record without a login is something different: it registers an employee in Odoo but does not give them access to log in themselves.

Is upgrading to Odoo 20 worth it?

That mainly depends on the apps and processes you use. For a webshop, return requests via the portal and WhatsApp follow-up can be interesting. A manufacturing company is likely to look more at changes in production planning and cost price processing. And for organizations that use Field Service, the transition to Planning requires extra attention.

An upgrade is not just a technical step. Also look at customization, integrations, and daily workflows. Not every feature is relevant for every organization or available under the same conditions. The official release notes are broken down by app and country, so always check what applies to your edition and localization.
